Guide to Awning Measurements

There are 3 different types of mounting available for the Thule awnings and the table below shows which awnings are available for each mounting type:

  • Wall - This is the most common installation and the flat adapter is normally included.
  • Roof - Mounted on top of the vehicle allowing for a better integrated design and more space under the awning. It is also a useful alternative in case of lack of space or width restrictions on the wall.
  • Rail - This is not a permanent fixing and is the easiest installation as no adapter is required.

Length  - The length of the awning is a key factor in determining which of the Thule awning ranges are available. The ranges cover a minimum size of 1.92m to 6.00m long. The following should be considered when measuring the length of awning for each type of mounting:

Roof: Measure the straight space between roof curves for the installation of adapters as illustrated above.

Wall: Allow at least 10cm space to avoid lights and ventilation caps and make sure the door can open under an opened awning.

Rail: Measure length of rail to determine the Thule awning length.

Projection - The depth of the awning will need to be specified and defines how big an area you want the awning to cover. Most awnings are available in 2 or 3 projection sizes dependent on length..

Price -  Awnings are available in a wide range of costs dependent on size, material, quality, accessories etc etc, but the reality is everyone has a budget and the Feature Selector allows you to easily see what features are available in the price range you are wishing to spend.

Warranty Period -  We believe that an awning is an investment for your future enjoyment and therefore we only supply awnings which have a minimum of a 2 year warranty. All Thule Awnings have a 2 year warranty. Beware other suppliers who don't mention the warranty period as it may only be for 1 year or the supplier isn't interested in supporting their customers post sales.

Rain Resistance -  The rain resistance (or waterproof rating) of awnings is measured in millimetres of water (mmH20). This rating relates to the pressure at which water is able to press through fabric. The standard waterproofing test involves applying water pressure behind a fabric sample until 3 drops of water are able to pass through the fabric. For example, a 3000 mmH20 rating means the fabric can sustain 3000 mm (3m) of water on top of the fabric before it will leak.

This rating will usually be abbreviated to PU 3000mm, where PU stands for polyurethane, as coating a fabric in polyurethane is the most common way to make a fabric waterproof..

Fabric Materials - Awning fabrics vary from lightweight, thin polyester to top-quality dyed acrylic. Fabric choice depends on how you will use the awning.
Frequent users should consider investing in a better, more expensive awning which, typically, will look more taut and rigid than lighter weight fabrics and will be built to last.

The Thule Omnistor Awning fabric is printed on both sides and consists of 5 layers:
1. Top coat of the PVC protects against scratching and fading
2. Vinyl with painted pattern
3. High strength polyester scrim
4. Vinyl with painted pattern
5. Top coat of the PVC protects against scratching and fading

The top quality PVC fabric used for Thule Omnistor awnings has coating on both sides keeping the fabric colour fixed, watertight, washable and durable. It not only ensures a high degree of scratch-resistance but also increases the UV-resistance and heat-resistance properties.

The fabric may even be rolled up for a few days, even if it is wet. and welded joints allow a perfect waterproof and long lasting awning.

Weight - This is dependent on the size of the awning (length and projection) and whether a motor has been fitted. The weight is generally only a key factor dependent on how close the vehicle weight is to its Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass (MTPLM). Further details of the weights for each type of awning is included in the Thule Awnings PDF which can be downloaded.

Colour - The Thule awning range is available in 4 cassette colours and up to 5 fabric colours. This wide choice is often key to ensure the awning and caravan or motorhome colours match or contrast in an aesthetically pleasing way.
